“The Young Alexander” by Alex Rowson out soon

Good day everyone, thanks to be here on Alessandro III di Macedonia, the blog about Alexander the Great and Hellenism. I’ve a new publication out soon to alert you, it’s:

The Young Alexander

by Alex Rowson

Publisher: William Collins (HarperCollins)

Out on: April 14, 2022

In this brilliant biography, Alex Rowson offers an astonishing new account of Alexander the Great – one of the most important figures of the ancient world, but whose earlier years have until now been a mystery.

Alexander the Great conquered land from Macedonia to Egypt to India, known now both for his accomplishments and his precocity – he achieved it all before dying abruptly at the age of thirty-two. But while much is known of his later years, almost nothing had survived of his first two decades – until now.

Since the astonishing discovery of the tomb of Macedon – that of Alexander’s father – in 1977, archaeologists have been scouring what is now northern Greece to uncover extraordinary details of life in ancient Macedonia.

In this book, Alex Rowson tells this story, drawing from new knowledge to portray the tempestuous relationship between Alexander’s parents, Philip and the Molossian princess Olympias, his education by Aristotle, and the strict military training which would serve him so well in later years.

In a rare explosion of fresh understanding of the ancient world, Rowson offers a new story about a figure we all thought we knew.

Alex Rowson is a writer and award-winning TV producer who has worked on some of the most successful ancient history and archaeology programmes of recent times, including Richard III: The King in the Car Park (C4), Time Team (C4), and Digging For Britain (BBC4). As well as Greece, he has studied and worked in the UK, Italy, Peru, and Egypt, and both his writing and photography have been widely published.

Publishing director, Arabella Pike, bought world rights from Donald Winchester for an undisclosed sum.

In THE YOUNG ALEXANDER, the writer, archaeologist and TV producer Alex Rowson will build on new archaeological discoveries in northern Greece to tell the story of the first 20 years of the “great warrior king from the tempestuous relationship between his parents and his education by Aristotle to the strict military training which would serve him so well in subsequent years”.

Pike said: “This is that rarest of books. Alex Rowson will blend dramatic new archaeological research with surviving historical accounts to breathe new life into his narrative of Alexander’s early life – years in which his future greatness was determined by the events of his youth. It has not been possible to tell this story satisfactorily until now so Alex’s book is the first to bring to life Alexander’s forgotten world of youth and childhood – surely one of the greatest stories of all time.”

Watson, Little

I’m curious to read it because it will explore Alexander’s youth which is a period not much covered by the sages. Being the publisher HarperCollins I also hope that it will be translated into Italian sooner or later *fingerscrossed*. You can add and save an alert to your Google Calendar to remind you of this publication.

Thank you and have a good week-end,
